Hearing aid styles are mostly about where the electronics sit relative to your ear canal. That single choice drives how powerful the device can be, how visible it is, how easily you can handle it, and how much it costs to maintain. Here is what each style is genuinely good and bad at.
Behind-the-ear (BTE)
The classic shape: the body sits behind your ear and a tube carries sound into a custom earmould. BTEs hold the largest batteries and the most powerful amplifiers, which makes them the standard choice for severe and profound hearing loss.
- Best for: severe to profound loss, children, anyone who needs maximum power
- Strengths: most powerful, most durable, easiest to handle, longest battery life
- Trade-offs: most visible style, earmould can feel occluded, tubing needs periodic replacement
Receiver-in-canal (RIC / RITE)
The most popular modern style. It looks like a slim BTE, but the speaker itself sits inside the ear canal on a thin wire instead of behind the ear. Moving the speaker closer to the eardrum gives cleaner, more natural sound in a much smaller body.
- Best for: mild to severe loss — the default recommendation for most adults
- Strengths: discreet, natural sound, open fittings avoid the blocked-up feeling, most rechargeable models are RICs
- Trade-offs: the in-canal receiver is exposed to earwax and moisture and may need replacing every couple of years
In-the-ear (ITE) and in-the-canal (ITC)
Custom-moulded to fill the bowl of your ear (ITE) or to sit partly inside the canal (ITC). Nothing sits behind the ear, which many people prefer — particularly spectacle wearers and anyone who wears a mask or a dupatta over the ears.
- Best for: mild to moderately severe loss, users who dislike anything behind the ear
- Strengths: no behind-ear component, easy to insert, controls are large enough to use
- Trade-offs: more wax exposure than BTE, smaller batteries, limited room for directional microphones
Completely-in-canal (CIC) and invisible-in-canal (IIC)
The smallest devices made, sitting deep in the canal with only a tiny removal cord visible. IIC models are effectively invisible in normal conversation. This is what most people mean when they ask for an "invisible hearing aid".
- Best for: mild to moderate loss where discretion is the top priority
- Strengths: essentially invisible, natural sound pickup from the ear's own shape, no wind noise
- Trade-offs: least powerful, shortest battery life, fiddly for anyone with reduced dexterity or poor eyesight, most affected by earwax, rarely rechargeable, cannot be fitted to every ear canal
